The origin of Mother’s Day in Mexico dates back to the Aztecs, who had a special day to honor Cihuacóatl, the mother of the gods. During colonial times, this commemoration merged with the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, considered the mother of Mexico.
In the early 20th century, inspired by the celebration of Mother’s Day in the United States, which started in 1908, some groups began to promote the idea of honoring mothers on a special day.
That’s how in 1922, the Mexican Red Cross organized the first official celebration of Mother’s Day. Since then, the festivity has become a deeply rooted tradition in our culture. But the date was not yet defined and it was celebrated on the second Sunday of the month like in other countries.
Finally, in 1940, President Manuel Ávila Camacho made the commemoration of this festivity official on May 10th of each year in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
